Story Within "There Was a HOLE Here. It's Gone Now" - An article by Andy Day

It's hard to say an instrumental album is a concept album. But I'll be damned if I don't claim them to be, in the sense a person can hear the story within the sounds, without it being drawn out for them. Well, now I'm giving my take on a concept album to a new level with The Andy Day Project's "There Was a HOLE Here. It's Gone Now." with the addition of vocals on almost every track. They're spoken, they're acted out, they have heavy distortion on them, echos, and tons of editing. But there is always a moment of clarity within the chaos of my new vocal structure. While some songs are scripted, others are improved with a massive amount of recording time, then all the usable parts get kept and rest is scrapped of saved for the "Making Of..." feature or the "Blooper Reel".
So what's the concept of this album? Being lost in a world of darkness, despair, and fear. Walking through an abandoned city in ruins, in another plane of existence, accessed through the act of masochism. The past is very much alive, as memories act as apparitions, manifesting themselves into the modern spectrum of reality in real time. This city's inhabitants are genetic byproducts, scientific antichrists, and a few stragglers struggling to survive this nightmare.
This is a totally new project for me, hence the name credited on the album.
Musically, this has been a blast to create, while overly stressful in other instances where technical malfunctions were present. The original idea behind "The Andy Day Project" was to take both existing styles and methods of music making I had taught myself, and combine them to make an entirely new sound. The idea of having lyrics wasn't even considered in the fetal stages.
It happened by accident. I was wandering the electronics of Walmart, looking at 5.1 surround sound systems, wireless keyboards, and a wireless mouse. I happened to notice a microphone, by Logitech (a brand I love to buy), for $8.00. I thought to myself, I can edit really well at this point in the game, and I can do custom effects in my sleep. Let's give it a shot. So I bought the microphone and quickly took to recording bits and pieces of my voice, playing around with the samples until I started seeing results that would actually enhance the music I was writing. I quickly recorded an improv song, "The Smell of Blood", which is the basis of the album's storyline. Soon came the task of writing lyrics, something I'm completely new to. But they came, and I found a new way to express myself through my music. I wrote the song "This is Forever" about broken promises, and the pain of dying love. The song "Echoing" is about being lost in the city, with a brief comment on the existence of time. Other songs like "Tape One: Recordings" and "Tape Two: Words of Warning" are merely readings of papers found next to a corpse in the game Silent Hill 2.

TO BE CONTINUED.

Production Nightmares: The Andy Day Project.

It's been over a week since I began production on "There Was a HOLE Here. It's Gone Now.", and thus far, I only have 3 completed songs. It's turning into a nightmare trying to get these songs in the light of day, some of my saved arrangements won't load, others take up to fifteen minutes, and my program continues to crash or freeze mid song. Glitch wise, I've been very fortunate that my songs have come out glitch free. Today I will continue my efforts towards the completion of this album, but I may need to keep my anti-anxiety meds near by, cause I can tell this will be stressful. While "HOLE" is in production, all other projects have been put on hold. I've taken away any idea of a release date for "Sanctuary 3" (Astroid Andy), and haven't even begun to work on "Omnipresence Decayed" (Temple of Sloth). But rest assured you Astral Projectors, I will not deprive you of any music. During the duration of the recording process, all Demos will be available for free download, and completed songs will not be until the final result. I will also be releasing a small series of "Making Of..." tracks, chronically my experience with vocal recording, combining sounds, technical issues, album details, and more. There will be 3 tracks titled "The Making Of...[Phase __:[Stage in Production], as well as a blooper reel. The album will come with a bonus disc titled "There Was a DEMO Here. It's Gone Now", featuring all the demo versions from the album. So keep your eyes peeled, cause it is coming along, just not as easy as I'd like it to be.

The song itself, upon completion, will reach over 12 minutes.

"The Smell of Blood" Demo from The Andy Day Project: NOW AVAILIBLE!

First official demo from "The Andy Day Project" album, "There Was a HOLE Here. It's Gone Now" is done. The song is titled The Smell of Blood, and includes vocals, for the first time in Astral Production history! The vocals aren't singing, but more talking, creating a narrative in fragments throughout the song. The demo I'll be posting will be the "Vocal and Pad Demo", which are only two parts of an otherwise large body of music. The song will include piano, strings, electronic effects, synth, and psychedelic elements while keeping the dark overtone heard in the Demo Version. I'm really excited about this song, I've never recorded vocals and written music for vocals before tonight, so this is kind of a big deal. There will be four songs on "HOLE" that have vocals, including a hidden track of a reading of a Sanity String.

So go check out the brand new demo and hear the voice behind Astral Productions for the first time!

"Blood Stained Memo", an orignal piece of artwork by Andy Day, plus description.

An original piece of art by me, this is a Promo for my story SLOTH and will be used in the book, along with other similar type pictures, some with illustrations, being mainly journal entries from different characters, memos of minor characters, high school notes, and full page illustrations. Later through out the month, I will post more pictures from what is being dubbed "The Sloth Book", where I write paragraphs of ideas, full pages of mid story arches, and sloppy illustrations and designs. Hope you enjoy. This page revivals a lot of plot (but no spoilers), hope it gets you stoked for the story in full. Check earlier posts to find other pages from "The Sloth Book". I will publish it on it's own upon it's completion.

(The Andy Day Project mini-album "There Was a HOLE Here. It's Gone Now", is in production in the other room as this article is being posted, that's how fucking updated we can get. Enjoy).

"The Andy Day Project" Finally Comes to Life. Mini Album in Production!

The Andy Day Project's "There Was a HOLE Here. It's Gone Now" is currently in production. This isn't quiet an album, not quiet an EP, but more of 12 hour recording session. The release is sprinkled with mini-tracks, composition pieces that range anywhere from 45 seconds to 2.5 minutes. There will be things never before heard in Astral Productions, along with some nostalgic landmarks that will take you back to a past experience within Astral Productions. There was a post I made shortly after this site's birth detailing what "The Andy Day Project" really is, but I can refresh the memories of those who forgot or didn't see it.

The Andy Day Project is the newest universe within Astral Productions. With the "Project", I combine both of my musical personalities, Astroid Andy & Temple of Sloth. Some songs have already surfaced in the form of a remix, and an unofficial first release, "Inside the Temple of Sloth", where I began using the software that crafts Temple of Sloth for the first time. It isn't as well "structured" as the newer "Project" songs are. The first official release will be "There Was a HOLE Here. It's Gone Now.", an EP type effort that will display the capabilities of The Andy Day Project's future releases.
Currently, this project isn't anything too serious in terms of staying active in releasing albums. I just wanted to try something new and see the outcome, which so far is pretty good. The main purpose is for the existence of this endeavor is the full length album "Rise of the Temple", which will serve as the fifth chapter in the SLOTH saga. Also, the "Project" will release a series of remix albums, re-imagining songs from past and present Astral Production albums. On Nov. 12, "Toxic Noise Pollution: Volume One" will be released, containing remixes from Astroid Andy albums "Sanctuary: City of Flames", "Sanctuary 2: The Lost Reality", "Decomposed", and "The Manipulated Living". Volume Two will contain songs from Temple of Sloth's "Masochism", "The Process of Decay", "Inside", and "Her Blood:My Lips".

All New Album Art for "The Astroid Andy Experience" Albums! (Plus "Embracing the Light" Release Info!)

As promised, with the release of the new cover art for "The Astroid Andy Experience", I would begin uploading "Embracing the Light". So now I am starting to upload the album to the Astral Productions music page. Also, after the release, I will post an article about the history of "The Double A Experience" along with providing access on this very site to the album! Now, keep in mind, I had just gotten away from my DJ Acid Trip phase and technique of making music altogether. These albums are nothing like Astroid Andy or Temple of Sloth. They are a mix between several different sub-genres of electonica music.

So tell me what you think of the covers? Yay or nay? And as for the music, I'll let you be the judge. I'm releasing them for nostalgia, and to show my roots.

These were all hand picked by me, and showcases the very wide variety of styles heard from Astral Productions as of 2011. The songs date back to 2008 to present, and virtually every album has at least one song displayed in this 21 track box set. The page itself will be updated in the next month to include descriptions of the songs, why they were chosen, stories behind them, and so forth. Also, if a song is individually clicked, the original art work is displayed along with artist and album.
"The Astral Productions Experience 2" is currently in production, and will feature 3 exclusive songs that will be wrote for that compilation, unreleased remixes, two songs from "The Astroid Andy Experience" (the original transitional project that produced two albums prior to Consumed), demos, and a few songs that didn't make the cut.

In other news, I am currently in the talks with Ghostly Nooz about doing a collaboration track, where he will provide some really cool guitar to the The Andy Day Project's first album "Rise of the Temple". If all goes well, there may be more songs with him in the future. Check out his other work that's been a continual source of interspersion here at Astral Productions. Nat Artlu: The Fake Hippy (Instrumental project) and his old band Dutch Rudder.

Sanctuary 3: Manifestations is being pushed back another month. Due to problems in the world outside my music, I have had little time to put the deserved effort into this project. On the plus side: The Process of Decay has been released early. Click on the link and you can listen and download it for free, it's my way of saying sorry for the delay of S3:M.

We've been experiencing some fallout's here at AP, what with album delays and problems getting an official website off the ground. But in the following three months, we should see a major turn around, especially after Sanctuary 3 is released. In the mean time, I'm going to use the "Astral Productions" music page to release a series of albums from Astroid Andy & Temple of Sloth of demos and remixes. Also, I'm going to give "The Astroid Andy Experience" a proper release, crafting new album art for each of the 2 albums and the one lo-fi/experimental remix album on the same page.

Astroid Andy has a total of 3 sets of unreleased material. Demo Tape(s) 1 & 2 each make up about 4 discs between the both of them, but will be released as full albums, with the disc number added to the end of each track title. Also, "Comatose Purgatory" a 3-Disc set will be released in it's proper form, each disc getting it's own page. Temple of Sloth has a mini Demo album dubbed "Elohim", and contains a few neat tracks. We should see the first of these pop up within the first couple weeks of November, if not sooner. Very little effort will be needed to release these, the only thing that needs to be done is the updated album art work, which should take about twenty to thirty minutes a piece. This can be done while uploading the songs to Bandcamp.

Anyways, that pretty much sums up what's currently happening. If anything changes, I'll be sure to let you know. I'll release the track listing to the Astroid Andy compilations sometime this week, along side the release of the first disc of "Comatose Purgatory". I'm planning on uploading "Embracing the Light" by The Astroid Andy Experience by the end of tonight, and I'll post a link to it here and on Facebook.

"The Mental Evolution" Finally Sees the Light of Day

Back between the production of "Decomposed" and "Transcendence Into Oblivion", I created a seven piece series of EP's dubbed "Astroid Andy's Mental Evolution Series". The EP's themselves were nothing more than heavily manipulation session of single Astroid Andy songs. They were recorded in Mono sound, and didn't take much effort to make. These weren't something I nessilary wanted on the front page of my music library, they were just K2 influenced experiments for drug effect enhancement. They weren't anything serious. But they were neat. I was listen to some of them the other day and thought, I wonder how people would react to these? So I jumped online and uploaded two of the EP's (two a week, the third installment will include a bonus EP) on their own music page, complete with custom artwork (more elaborate than most Astral Production album covers, intentionally for the quality, a sense of irony) and are completely free!

Astroid Andy's Temple of Sloth Series to Be Released in Extended EP's.

Album Covers for the Upcoming EP's

There exists amongst the Astroid Andy record collection a stunning piece of work that has never been released in their proper forms due to size restrictions. I'm speaking of course about "Temple of Sloth [The Complete Saga] EP".
***FLASHBACK!***
The Temple of Sloth Saga began with the song "Journey to the Temple of Sloth" by Astroid Andy from the album "Decomposed". It was soon followed by a follow up, "Return to the Temple of Sloth". It was shortly after this time that ideas for the story SLOTH was born, and began the entire Temple of Sloth Epic that spans all Astral Productions.
*************
This 2-Disc EP contains 4 songs, all of the Temple of Sloth songs presented in their "Extended" versions or as they are referred to on the track listing "Director's Cut".

Well, to tide people over until the release of "Sanctuary 3" (pushed back to Oct. 30), I have decided to release 3 EP's or "Singles" containing the songs from "Temple of Sloth [The Complete Saga] EP" in the same fashion as the "Inside the Temple of Sloth" release. Each song will be divided into "Acts" or "Scenes", and will reveal the entirety of the song with one strait through listen.

Release dates for these EP's should be relatively soon, and "Journey to the Temple of Sloth" will contain a remixed version of the "Director's Cut", curtsy of "The Andy Day Project". This will be a separate release. Album covers will be released within the next few days, following with the first release of "Journey to the Temple of Sloth" (we should see all this happen by Sunday, the 9th).

Temple of Sloth Blog Post

The Man, The Myth, and the Music: A Brief Look into Temple of Sloth
taken from the "Temple of Sloth Blog"

Music is as natural in my veins as blood. It's what keeps me going, keeps me sane. For over 5 years, I had created music based around my life under different names (DJ Acid Trip, The Astroid Andy Experience, and ) The music I made helped me concentrate on something other than the issues I was dealing with in real life, it became a sanctuary and escape from all the pain. So I pressured it ravenously. In the 21 years I have been alive, I have been through a lot of great things and events of pure horror. From finding love to the grips of multiple drug addiction, I'm lucky to still be functioning.

Asroid Andy had been my main (and proudest) outlet of music since 2008. That was the year I reinvented myself, mentally, physically, and musically. I had went from making sloppy Techno music to making beautifully arranged experimental, progressive, ambient music. After a relapse back on pain pills, I released "Consumed" in 2008, chronically my struggling addiction.

Fast forward two years and we find my music library has grown, my style has taken some significant changes, and a new project had emerged. This project came about while working on a song for my "Temple of Sloth Epic", a series of four songs, considerably long, that told a story of an alternate universe. I had even started writing a story based around these songs. I was on the 3rd installment of the series, "Inside the Temple of Sloth" and decided to use the newly acquired synthesizer to add more depth to the song. It was all hand written arrangements, giving me a true sense of accomplishment.

Soon I took all the material I wrote for "ItToS" and combined it into a stand-alone song, entitled "Inside [Parts I-VII]". The first song I intentionally wrote was "There Was Something Here, Once". I knew I had stumbled upon a totally new creature, I just needed to bring it to life. In between Astroid Andy albums of late 2010, I crafted 3 albums: Inside the Temple of Sloth, Inside the Temple of Sloth 2, and Collapse of the Temple of Sloth, all under the Astroid Andy name.

2011 rolled around, and I decided to give these albums, which didn't fit the Astroid Andy sound at all, a proper release. The only problem was coming up with a name to release these albums under. It took little time, and the name "Temple of Sloth" was set in stone, feeling appropriate seeing as all the music was written for the story "SLOTH" based around "The Temple Epic".

The first thing I did when I adopted the new name for the new project was to rename and revamp the albums. Inside the Temple of Sloth became simply "Inside" while Part 2 became "Her Blood:My Lips", Collapse became "The Scars You Left Behind". I moved some songs, added a few new ones, and revamped a few as well. Temple of Sloth was underway, and had a bright new future alongside Astroid Andy.

Flash forward six months and production began on the first official release by Temple of Sloth album, "Masochism". This album introduced brand new elements to the TOS sound now with strings, piano, and brass. Combining elements has always been my way of making music, it's my personality in sound. So this album came out wonderful and really shines in the Temple of Sloth Discography. Following "Masochism" came the (unreleased) "The Process of Decay", a prelude to the "Sloth Epic". This marks the first time on any TOS release that drums are used, curiosity of the Astroid Andy sound department. Also on this release is a bonus song as the finale of the album by "The Andy Day Project", a combination of both Astroid Andy and Temple of Sloth's sound structure and definitive sounds.

The next Temple of Sloth release will be entitled "Omnipresence Decayed", which will be a fairly late point in the ending plot of the story Sloth. I'll report updates on this sometime after the release of "The Process of Decay", which I'm planning a lot for.

Included with the release will be a downloadable folder containing photos, album covers, concept designs for alternate album covers, detailed song descriptions including excepts from the story Sloth, the entire chapter in the story Sloth this album took it's title from, 3 Temple of the Astroid songs: Astroid Andy songs combined with Temple of Sloth songs.( Not to be confused with "The Andy Day Project", this is simply just the name I gave for these remixes. They are complete versions of both artist songs combined into one.), "The Andy Day Project" exclusive song, and 3 Astroid Andy Remixes from the Sanctuary Saga.

I have big plans for this project, and I just hope one day it gets recognized and enjoyed by a wide audience as well as Astroid Andy. Astral Productions is my heart and soul. I hope you enjoy all it has to offer.

The Astral Productions Video Game Library (A Guide on Amazon.com)

Check out the guide on Amazon I just did showcasing the vast collection of games here at Astral Production that help fuel the creative juices. Little tidbits of trivia are hidden in there. So check it out and see if we have similar tastes, or maybe I could help you figure out a new game to try out.

So click this line of text to venture forth unto The Video Game Library of Astral Productions (In Color!)

The Temple of Sloth Epic: The Songs & the Story

Did the chicken come before the egg? That I'm not sure of, but one thing is for sure, the songs came before the story. In fact, ideas for the story helped fuel and shape the songs. That's pretty much the entire structure of Temple of Sloth's music, is that each song is built around a plot point or location in the story. Originally titled "Temple of Sloth", the name for the story was changed to simply: "Sloth". [For most of you who may not know, I am current working on a very long epic story based around a large body of musical work I have done.] While the main focus takes place in the Temple, a decent part of the story takes place in the realm of Sloth before a character steps foot into the Temple. The appearance of the songs are not in chronological order based around the story. I did this intentionally to give myself a world of ideas to build off of and craft the epic story in progress. While still in the rough draft process, the writing style will change somewhat significantly in the final draft. I am projecting a completion date for around December of 2012. I plan on releasing bits of the story with certain albums, thus giving them more depth. Already in the works is the prelude to the story, "The Process of Decay" which will be released on Nov. 12, 2011 alongside the albums release. I plan on releasing the story line behind the Sanctuary Saga upon it's completion, some months after the release of The Andy Day Project's contribution to the soundtrack: "The Rise of the Temple". I will release a partial piece with that album, as well as the first part in Sanctuary, which takes place right before Andrew (the character we meet in "Decay') finds out his purpose within the Temple walls (specifically, the Centralsanctum).

COMING SOON! A DETAILED LIST OF EVERY SONG IN ORDER FOR THE TEMPLE OF SLOTH EPIC!

The Andy Day Project

There comes a time when I join forces musically, blending both of my musical persona into a single track. This has happened on several occasions, slipping in anywhere from 23 to 75 bars of hand written Temple of Sloth synth along side my manipulated sound clips of Astroid Andy. Most of the time they go unnoticed. Other times they become very apparent, and it is these instances that have spawned a new musical project I plan to take on. The Andy Day Project will consist of songs combining both styles of my music into one song, showing the best sounds each style has to offer. The first album will be for the Temple of Sloth Saga, and the current title is Rise of the Temple of Sloth. The first official song by The Andy Day Project will be released on the bonus disc for "The Process of Decay". I then plan to work on an Astroid Andy Remix EP Series under this new musical plane. The remixes will consist of songs from the following Astroid Andy albums: Sanctuary 1 & 2, Astral Plane [EP], Decomposed, Skin, and Consumed [2-Disc Deluxe Edition], and take on Temple of Sloth's Masochism, The Process of Decay, Her Blood:My Lips, and Inside by adding drums, additional written material including strings and piano, while including manipulated sound loops. Most of the songs will be able to fall into the Temple of Sloth Saga with a few exceptions. The first unofficial release of a The Andy Day Project album is Inside the Temple of Sloth, found at www.astroidandy.bandcamp.com. So be on the look out, and I will post more news as this project progresses.

Now, the first outing isn't what it will be like now. When I made this, I had just discovered how to utilize the synthesizer that's used to compose the world of Sloth. So this is more of a demo. It was released around the "Transcendence Into Oblivion/In Sanity Era" when I was still figuring out effects, BPM, reverb, and distortion techniques. The newer TADP will have a much more refined tone, there will be a 6 song remix EP released prior to the full length "Rise of the Temple". These remixes will all be from Sanctuary 1 & 2, giving you a better look at what to expect when hearing the full length album. Dates for these releases still vary, but I want to have "Rise" out by January, and the remix EP out by November, following the proper release of TOS's Process of Decay.

So here's the direct link to The Andy Day Project's demo "Inside the Temple of Sloth"
